The White Hart, New Mills Details and Directions The pub sessions are informal events
where we all get together on Sunday lunchtime to play a few tunes, or you can
just come along and listen. The number of musicians varies between
six and sixteen... we usually have some clarinet players, fiddle players, double
bass, mandolin, guitars, pianists (there's a real piano in the White Hart) and
whoever else turns up. We have had a trumpet once or twice and it was great (but
you probably need a mute!)
The session usually kicks off
at about 13:30 and finishes around 17:00. Sessions are held monthly, see our Events
pages for dates.
If you are a newbie and can read a bit there
is sheet music for most of the tunes kicking about, both in concert and in B flat.
Sheet music is available (pdf format) on the repertoire
page on this site.
You don't read sheet music?
There are MIDI files (of rather
dubious quality!) in the repertoire page
on this site.
If you have a new tune that you think would
go down well please come and play it at the sessions! A good few of the sessioneers
can read dots reasonably well, so it's great if you can manage some sheet music
for us to have a go at. Bring along a dozen or so copies to pass around, and write
chords on them if you can. If you are really advanced, transcriptions from old
recordings go down well.
It's OK to bring kids along.
The White Hart
sells yummy Robinsons beer and also does a nice line in sandwiches and coffee.
New
Mills is about 10 miles South of Stockport. The pub is on Dye House Lane.
You can get to New Mills on the
train, though on Sundays the trains are variable due to engineering work, so we
STRONGLY suggest that you check them out before you set off. If there are no trains
there is usually a substitute bus service. New Mills is blessed with TWO railway
stations (New Mills New Town and New Mills Central), on different lines, so there's
a good chance you can get a train... well at least if you are travelling from
Manchester. Note - there is a lovely scenic
walk from the stations which takes you along a groovy gorge with industrial architecture
and the shiny new Millenium Bridge. I couldn't find a handy website with details
of this walk so you are on your own, but it is well worth it if you don't get
lost! By Rail from New Mills Central (the station nearest
