Manchester pub session-
Details and Directions

November 2005 - we will be holding a warm-up session for the Klezmer Big Band on the afternoon of Sunday 20th November at this venue.

October 2004 - see details of Klezmer Class and session in Autumn 2004

Pub Session - The Hare and Hounds, Shudehill, Manchester

Attendance at the Manchester Session was a bit patchy so we haven't continued it in 2004. Please contact Steve with your thoughts (0161-881 0505).

Details for the ex-session

The pub sessions are informal events where we all get together on Sunday lunchtime to play a few tunes, or you can just come along and listen.

The number of musicians varies between six and sixteen... we usually have some clarinet players, fiddle players, double bass, mandolin, guitars, pianists (there's a real piano in the White Hart) and whoever else turns up. We have had a trumpet once or twice and it was great (but you probably need a mute!)

The first session was on Sunday 20th October 2002. We all had a great time and decided to continue monthly.

The session is in the function room, upstairs.

Hare and Hound, Manchester

Times

The session kicks off (no, not a fight, silly) at 14:00 and finishes around 17:00.

Sheet Music

If you are a newbie and can read a bit there is sheet music for most of the tunes kicking about, both in concert and in B flat. Sheet music is available (pdf format) on the repertoire page on this site.

You don't read sheet music?

There are MIDI files (of rather dubious quality!) in the repertoire page on this site.

Got any new tunes?

If you have a new tune that you think would go down well please come and play it at the sessions! A good few of the sessioneers can read dots reasonably well, so it's great if you can manage some sheet music for us to have a go at. Bring along a dozen or so copies to pass around, and write chords on them if you can. If you are really advanced, transcriptions from old recordings go down well.

Kidz

It's OK to bring kids along.

Curry for breakfast, anyone?

Shudehill is in the rag trade area and there is a goodly number of cheap curry cafes nearby. You can get a great meal for about 4 quid, ideal for pouring lots of beer on top of. These two are marked on the map -

This and That Cafe, 3 Soap Street is famous for it's Nihari - a very rich lamb stew which they sell only on Sundays.

Al Faisal Tandoori, 58 Thomas Street is my own favourite for everything except nihari.

There are loads more for you to try!

Beer and Sandwiches, Tea and Coffee

The Hare and Hounds sells Holts bitter at only £1.42 a pint (October 2004) and sells tea and coffee and sandwiches.

Directions (map)

Shudehill is behind the Arndale Centre and is roughly half way between Piccadilly Gardens and Victoria Station - see the maps for details.

It's very close to Shudehill metro station.

The session is in the function room, upstairs in the Hare and Hounds.

Car Parking

They are busy building things on all the open air spaces in Manchester which used to be car parks., so public transport is worth considering.

The Arndale Centre multi-story car park is about 100m from the pub but you may be lucky and get some on-street parking which is free on Sundays.

Roads in Central Manchester can be a bit chocka on Sundays with the shops being open so public transport is worth considering.
