Klezbarn January 2003

back to Klezbarn page

The January Klezbarn took place on the afternoon and evening of Saturday 18th January 2003.
Next time we will try and remember to put money in the electricity meter so it won't be so cold!

Workshop with Ilana Cravitz

Everyone had arrived by about 14:30 and we were straight into a workshop given by Ilana Cravitz who had come up specially from London to teach us a new hora and a bit of dancing.

Kompleat history of Klezmer with Sue Cooper

After tea and biscuits, Sue Cooper gave an informative talk about the history of klezmer, illustrated with some musical examples from CD's.
Part 2: From 3000 BC to the first recordings (1908).

You can read Sue's history notes here.

Thats's funny, Sue looks exactly the same as she does in March Klezbarn!

Munchkins

19:00 and it must be time for dinner. It's very pleasant to have a sociable dinner for 20 odd people.

Workshop with Ray Kohn

After dinner was our second workshop, led by Ray Kohn. This one focussed on ensemble playing. Local band Klezmik were in the spotlight. The band played a tune and then Ray suggested different arrangements - it was enlightening to hear how the sound of the band changed, and Klezmik were very game to put up with all the suggestions thrown at them!

The Sesh

Then it was time to play until we dropped (about 4am).

After an unmentionable breakfast and tidying up the barn we all toddled off to the monthly klezmer pub session in central Manchester...

This event was funded by the JMI.
