Klezmer Dance Workshops

Klezmer Dance?

klezmer dancersKlezmer is the traditional music of the Eastern European jews which was played at weddings and other celebrations... and people danced!

This series of 4 dance workshops provides an opportunity to learn the different dances from the Klezmer dance repertoire, including those known as Freylakhs, Bulgars, Horas, Shers and Terkishes. We will include traditional line dances, circle dances, couple and set dances, and modern forms that have developed and are danced on the klezmer scene today.

Whilst the series of four workshops will provide a full introduction to the repertoire of dances, participants are not required to attend them all.

You can find a list of some types of klezmer dance here.

Performance

There will be a live performance at the 2005 Big Band concert.

Live Music!

Each dance set will be accompanied by live music provided by a Klezmer dance band, who will play the traditional repertoire of an Eastern European Klezmer dance band.

The workshops will be led by Sue Cooper (dance), Ros Hawley (band leader) and Audrey Lewis (dance).

Sue has been playing klezmer music for 18 years and led dances at many events within the Jewish community - weddings, barmitzvahs and festivals.

Audrey brings many years experience of ressearching and teaching Jewish dance and most recently led a series of workshops in Yorkshire.

Ros is a Manchester based Klezmer clarinettist and teacher, who has also played at many events for dancing and recently studied at Klezcamp USA, America's leading Yiddish Folkarts Programme.
